Like Guernsey, the island of Alderney has been through some turbulent times and there are fortifications spanning hundreds of years all over the Island. Many of these show how later armies adapted and strengthened existing buildings. This is most noticeable in the widespread use by the German invaders of Concrete.

One of the largest Forts in Alderney is at Fort Clonque. The view you get of this from the top of the hill is amazing. It's a pity it was a bit hazy when Sven visited, but he thought even through the haze it looked well worth a visit. |
| Unfortunately, it was locked !!! One thing Sven noticed about the Channel Islands in general was that the sign posting was not that good. He feels that a simple board at the fort explaining a bit about it's history would have made the long walk worthwhile. |

The scenery at the West end of the Island is extremely rugged, and it provides a nesting area for huge colonies of sea birds. They reckon that in the two Gannet colonies there are up to 5000 pairs nesting. |
All too soon it was time for Sven to leave Alderney and fly back to Guernsey. One touch he thought was really clever was the way the sundial had been painted in bright colours so the locals could tell the time when it was dark.
